d group frequently asked questions

What are D-Groups? D-Groups are small groups (3-6 people) committed to the study and application of God’s truths in their lives. The group will provide accountability and encouragement for you as you live your life for the Lord.

Why D-Groups?  In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commanded His followers to “go therefore and make disciples” (28:19a).  One of the ways we are to do that is by “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (28:19b).  We also see throughout the book of Acts that small groups and growing spiritually together was vital to the early church. D-Groups give us an opportunity to make disciples and to invest in others as we grow in our walk with the Lord together.

When and where do we meet? We are encouraging groups to meet anytime and anyplace that works best for your group. If a group would like to meet at the church, please email Kent Shepherd (kshepherd@fvbchurch.org) to make those arrangements. If members of your group have children, you may consider Wednesday Night (6:00-6:45 PM), this will correlate with our Wednesday Night children’s activities.

How long do the meetings last?  D-Groups generally will last 45 minutes to 1 hour.  The time also depends on your group.

How long will my D-Group continue?  The D-Groups will last 12-16 weeks. Each group will be unique in its makeup and, therefore, unique in its duration.  The goal of D-Group is to grow in the Word and make disciples that make disciples. Your group at the end of the duration of the study may choose to divide, create a new group, or continue to grow together.

How do I join?  Anyone interested in D-Groups please call the church office or email kshepherd@fvbchurch.org to sign up. Staff and facilitators will work together to develop groups.

How many people are in each group?  A D-Group is three to six people, including the facilitator.  Small groups of this size are ideal to provide an atmosphere of deeper relationships, discussions, transparency, and accountability.

What types of groups are offered? Multiple types of groups to choose from men’s, ladies’, or couples.

Are the meetings required Meeting together as a group is essential to the nature of the D-Group to help you grow in your daily walk with Christ. Your group will determine the frequency that works best for the group (i.e., weekly, biweekly).

What material will we study? We have a list of studies that is available for the group to choose (please see attached list). There is also a RightNow Media channel with suggested D-Group studies.

Do I really need to sign a D-Group commitment card?  Yes. The D-Group commitment helps provide the framework for grace filled accountability which is essential to discipleship and spiritual growth.

Do I have to teach? D-Groups are designed to study the Word of God during the week in preparation for your time together. Therefore, leaders do not act as teachers but facilitators. The facilitators will guide the discussion among the members of the group and be the point of contact with the D-Group between meetings. There is required facilitator training twice a year.  If you are interested in being a facilitator, please email kshepherd@fvbchurch.org.
